GEFOS

The GEFOS study is a project aimed at identifying genetic determinants of musculoskeletal and aging-related traits. It focuses on genetic risk factors for osteoporosis, novel bone phenotypes, and gene-environment interactions, and translating findings into clinical practice. Since 2008, GEFOS has made numerous genomic discoveries in bone and muscle phenotypes, including BMD, lean mass, and grip strength, through large-scale GWAS meta-analyses.

SINTER – Collaborations

The SINTER study is a large research project conducted by Erasmus MC. We are collaborating with the following clinics: Bone Center Diabetology Geriatrics Center for Healthy Weight Nephrology Thyroid Center Vascular Medicine Mastocytosis Together with these teams, we aim to understand how different body processes interact and what this means for a person’s risk of […]

SINTER – About this study

About this study EraSmus medIcal ceNTer skEletal fRagility (SINTER) study Research on bone strength and the risk of fractures At Erasmus MC, we are investigating why some people maintain strong bones—even when living with a chronic illness—while others develop weaker bones, even when otherwise healthy. This research is part of the SINTER study. With this […]

Why do bones of many people break

Bones are crucial for the body’s structure, mobility, and protection of vital organs. However, many individuals experience fractures due to a combination of factors that weaken bone strength, increase susceptibility to injury, and affect bone regeneration. These factors are influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environmental elements, and understanding them is essential to improving bone health […]

How does the study of inherited characters help us understand the risk of disease.

The study of inherited traits plays a crucial role in understanding the risk of various diseases, particularly those affecting the musculoskeletal system. Genetic factors influence key aspects of bone and muscle health, such as bone mineral density (BMD), bone quality, muscle mass, and strength. By examining hereditary traits, researchers can identify individuals who are genetically […]

Patients

How does the study of inherited characters help us understand the risk of disease. Studying hereditary traits helps identify genetic factors influencing bone density, muscle mass, and fracture risk. Genetics play a key role in conditions like osteoporosis and sarcopenia, affecting bone strength, spinal alignment, and physical function. Understanding these factors allows for personalized prevention […]
