What if a routine dental X-ray could tell us something about a child’s overall bone health?

A fascinating new paper by our team member Vid Prijatelj and colleagues explores exactly that question using data from the Generation R Study.

The researchers investigated whether the thickness of the mandibular cortex, visible on panoramic dental X-rays, is linked to bone mineral density in children around puberty.

The findings are promising: children with higher bone mineral density also tended to have a thicker mandibular cortex. Genetic analyses further suggest that these traits share part of their biological background.

Why does this matter? Panoramic X-rays are already widely used in dentistry. Could they potentially provide an additional window into skeletal health, without requiring an extra examination?
