Katerina Trajanoska
I have a medical background and substantial experience in genetics and translational research. I was trained as a nurse and as a medical doctor in Macedonia and specialized in Genetic Epidemiology at the Erasmus Medical Center. My PhD was focused on musculoskeletal genomics identifying causal risk factors for musculoskeletal diseases with an emphasis on utilizing polygenic risk scores to predict disease susceptibility and employing Mendelian Randomization for causal inference analysis.

I have made several important contributions to the understanding of musculoskeletal health, applying both epidemiological and genomic technologies resulting in more than 50 original research papers, reviews and book chapters. My research projects had a very collaborative and international character where I led and contributed to numerous research lines within international consortia, such as the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporosis Consortium (GEFOS) and the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology Consortium (CHARGE).
After my PhD, I moved to Canada for three years to do postdoctoral work at the Genome Medicine Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) program in McGill University, working on sequencing efforts for cardiovascular diseases prevention programs. During my postdoctoral training I also gain interest in the interplay between monogenic and polygenic variations in complex diseases to identify novel pathways and further strengthen the drug discovery and development pipeline.
Currently I am working as assistant professor at the Translation Skeletal Genomics group with an end goal to help answer translational questions regarding the utility of using genomics data and performing genomics-assisted medical decision-making. I am also actively involved as a teaching assistant and lecturer at The Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) programme.
